Estimators of labour force participation and wage determinants - the role of discrimination and efficiency wage hypotheses.

UMO-2012/05/E/HS4/01510 - SONATA BIS

This  research  agenda  has  started  as  a  smaller  project  for  Global  Develoment  Network who  funded  an  application  by  Joanna  Tyrowicz  and  Irene  van  Staveren  „Gender Discrimination Over Transition” (January 2012 –June 2013). You can read more about this projecthere.Working with mass collections of LFS or census data (like IPUMS, LSMS, or ISSP) we figured  these  sources  are  quite  scarce  with  many  important  countries  missing  entirely. Thus, we set up a new research agenda to collect more data. At the same time, engaged in different  project  on  efficiency  wages,  we  realized  many  of  the  empirical  analyses  of  the discrimination  problem  are  likely  to  be  biased.  This  is  because  if  efficiency  wages  are indeed used in industries were women are scarce, any empirical strategy employed so far in the  literature  will  find  discrimination  even  if  womens’  wages  equal  exactly  their productivity.  We  tried  to  work  on  a  method  that  could  immunize  the  estimations  to  that problem.  Finally,  there  can  be  important  consequences  of  discrimination on  both  poverty and child-bearing. We thought that combining all these topics in one research agenda could prove useful.

Scale and determinants of the intersectoral reallocation of workers in Poland 1995-2014

UMO-2012/05/E/HS4/01506 - SONATA BIS

Analyzing the scale and the determinants of individual intersectoral reallocation of workers in Poland in the period 1995-2014 we answer the following questions: (1) What is the relative role of the influx of "new" and the reallocation of "old" workers in the observed changes of sectoral structure of employment in Poland?

Public sector wage premium in Poland: the role of employment structure.

UMO-2013/11/D/HS4/03852 - SONATA

The available data on wages in Poland shows that the average wage in the public sector is significantly higher than in the private sector. However due to significant differences in the structure of employment between the sectors, direct comparison of average wage is not eligible.

Valuation, fairness aspects and preferences for renewable energy sources and their location in Poland and Germany

Valuation, fairness aspects and preferences for renewable energy sources and their location in Poland and Germany

UMO-2013/09/B/HS4/01493 - OPUS

The overall objective of this project is to value in monetary terms the negative externalities of renewablesgenerated by the different renewable energies in Poland. By the negative externalities we understand e.g. changes in the landscape caused by the grid extension, a construction of wind farms or a destruction of local ecosystems. Apart from that, the proposed project aims at analysing the heterogeneity of attitudes, preferences and fairness aspects concerning the choices and spatial allocations of the renewable energy production. Another objective of the project is to conduct a comparative analysis between the Polish results with the results obtained in the similar project currently carried out inGermany by the Departmentof Environmental Economics and Lands in the Institute of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planningat the Technical University of Berlin (“Efficient and fair allocation of renewable energy production at the national level(EnergyEFFAIR)”financed by the Federal Ministry of Research and Education -project number 01LA1110A). The comparison of the Polish and German research results will allow to capture changes in the valuation and the acceptance of the renewable externalities depending on the differences in the baseline levels in renewable energy productions in both countries (the lower in Poland, the higher in Germany). In addition, the comparative analysis might be a starting point for a discussion of a cooperation in the energy transmission from renewable sources in the borderareas in those two countries.

Short-and long-term effects of economic policy instruments for sustainable growth: co-evolutionary approach.

Short-and long-term effects of economic policy instruments for sustainable growth: co-evolutionary approach.

UMO-2013/08/S/HS4/00254 - FUGA

The aim of the project is to evaluate which set of economic instruments and changes institutional framework will best enable reaching the path of sustainable development.
Sustainable development requires the use of various instruments of environmental policy and innovation and other economic policy instruments. Assessing the long-term effects of these instruments, in turn, requires an understanding of the micro-mechanisms underlying development
the system, in particular how people's behavior, changes in technology, finances, environment and institutional changes co-occur (Kemp et al. 1998; Kallis and Noorgard, 2010; Safarzynska et al., 2012).
In this project, the effects of various instruments will be assessed from the perspective of co-evolutionary theories. The term co-evolution has been recognized as crucial to understanding change within complex socio-ecological systems, including changes institutional and behavioral changes, as well as changes in production and consumption (Norgaard, 1984; Bowles et al., 2003; Kallis and Noogard, 2010). The term "co-evolution" describes a situation where the two or more populations (or evolutionary systems) are interconnected in such a way that
changes in one population affect the course of changes in the other population. Although in the theoretical analysis of systemic changes the term co-evolution is cited many times as key to understanding the changes taking place in the economy and social systems (eg, Kemp et al., 1998; Geels, 2005) lack formal requirements co-evolutionary models that would allow analysis of the impact of policy instruments economic and social dynamics of socio-economic systems.

Global production chain: value added and productivity of entreprises.

UMO-2013/09/D/HS4/01519 - SONATA

The objective of the proposed project is to assess how the presence of the economies of the CEEC including Poland in the global production precess affects the level of value added in the economy and the effectiveness of production processes. The baseline research hypothesis is that of increasing importance of globalization on the production processess in the economies of the CEEC.

Microeconomics of inequality with special focus to gender: selected issues

UMO-2015/16/T/HS4/00305 - ETIUDA

The conducted research is aimed at broadening the knowledge of the changing situation of women in the labor markets in Central and Eastern Europe. This includes providing information on consistently estimated gender wage and participation gaps in the labor markets of transition countries and their evolution over time, as well as comparing the estimates obtained for transition countries with those obtained for the Western European control group.

Comparative analysis of the impact of parenthood on the labor market performance of men and women: do family benefits matter?

UMO-2013/11/N/HS4/03136 - PRELUDIUM

The main goal of the proposed research project is to assess and identify the links between the quality and availability of the family benefits aimed at parents and the labor market impact of the fertility. The labormarket impact of the fertility is understood as the impact of fertility on both the employment and the wagerates. The specific goals of the proposed analysis involve:

1) providing the estimates of the effect ofparenthood on employment and wages of men and women for a broader set of the countries and mostimportantly for the set of post transition CEE economies that have not been examined with that regard so fa rand

2) presenting the results of the analysis in the framework of the existing family policies, i.e. investigatethe relation between the formulations of the family oriented policies and the cost of parenthood for men andwomen.

The main hypothesis the proposed research states is that the existing differencesin the effect of the fertility on employment and wages of men and women are closely related to the availability and quality of the familyoriented benefits. Specific hypothesis state what is the expected direction of the impact of the parenthoodstatus on employment and wage rates of men and women, as well as what is the expected relation betweenthe derived results and the availability and quality of the specific family policies.
