Frauds or scams are now the most common crime in the world, effecting roughly one out of 10 people. It is estimated that fraud carries a price tag of over $4 trillion globally, which is almost equivalent to the US yearly budget. Victims of fraud also report psychological issues, ranging from depression to suicide. In this talk, I will present research and findings from a range of studies investigating factors that can help explain who falls prey to fraudulent solicitations and what demographic personality factors might be associated with vulnerability to fraudulent solicitations. I will present results from over 10 empirical studies that have examined individuals' responses to different types of fraud, such as lottery, investment, fake tickets and websites. I will also present intervention studies that are designed to reduce compliance with fraudulent tickets. Taken together, our results suggest that almost everyone is vulnerable to fraudulent solicitation, depending on the type of fraud. Our work also reveals that certain personality characteristics and capabilities can help explain a higher degree of vulnerability to fraudulent solicitations.
