This paper examines the impact of international migration to Turkey on internal migration, with a focus on racially motivated causes. We uncover heterogeneity among immigrants based on their nationality. Using a detailed dataset on bilateral migration flows from 2014 to 2022, our findings indicate that an increase in the share of foreigners in the origin province has a negative effect on internal migration for all residents of Turkey. Whereas a negative effect appears when looking at the effect of foreigner share in origin on internal migration of Turkish people. Extending our analysis to asymmetric effects shows that there is a larger impact of the foreigner share in destination observed in provinces with low internal mobility. Moreover, we control overall satisfaction with public services, people from well-serviced provinces are less likely to migrate to provinces as a result of an increasing foreigner shares.
