The Jubilee of Professor Jan Jakub Michałek

Professor Jan Jakub Michałek, an esteemed scholar and educator of multiple generations of students, recently celebrated his 70th birthday. His remarkable contributions have significantly advanced our understanding of the mechanisms behind the integration of the Polish and global economies.

The celebration took place on November 21st in the historic Senate Chamber of the Kazimierzowski Palace, with the Rector of the University of Warsaw, Professor Alojzy Z. Nowak, in attendance.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who joined this special occasion, including representatives of the University, scholars, government officials, family members, friends, colleagues, students, and alumni of Professor Michałek.

The celebration featured a scientific panel session coordinated by Professor Jan Hagemejer, with insightful contributions from: Professor Andrzej Cieślik, Professor Jacek Lewkowicz, Dr. Łukasz Matuszczak and Professor Karolina Pawlak (Poznań University of Life Sciences).

During the event, Professor Michałek reflected on his academic journey, sharing the guiding principles of his work:
“I have tried to demonstrate the welfare benefits of the liberal economy in comparison to protectionism. This thesis has been reflected in the main principles of the WTO and EU economic policy.”

He also spoke about his connection to the Faculty of Economic Sciences:
“International economy, including the theory and practice of economic integration, is fascinating, especially in times of change (such as in Poland). I have spent most of my career at the Faculty of Economic Sciences. I have also had the opportunity to work abroad, studying at the College of Europe and working at the World Trade Organization. I have met outstanding economists and been fortunate to work with excellent co-authors. Serving as Dean was an interesting challenge for me, requiring solutions to both human and technical-financial problems. It also allowed me to explore the University’s diversity, which is essential to its strength, through my participation in Senate meetings. Academic work gives me immense satisfaction, and I would like to remain active as long as possible.”

We extend our best wishes to Professor Michałek for continued success and fulfillment in his academic endeavors.

We also warmly invite you to explore the photographic highlights from this memorable celebration.
