School of Actuarial Science, edition 2026
The School of Actuarial Science is an initiative carried out at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, University of Warsaw, in cooperation with Polish Society of Actuaries. It’s coordinated by Prof. Łukasz Delong (Department of Statistics and Econometrics) – director of the “Actuary – Data Scientist – Risk Manager” educational track offered at WNE UW.
During this year’s edition, participants attended lectures on the impact of climate change on the insurance sector, the MSSF 17 regulatory framework with particular emphasis on profit‑sharing insurance, and gained practical data‑analysis skills using the Python programming language.
As part of the course, the Faculty hosted Prof. Jose Garrido (Concordia University) and Prof. José Luis Vilar‑Zanón (University of Madrid), who delivered the lecture series “The impact of climate change in insurance: quantification and leveraging.” The sessions explored key challenges related to quantifying climate risks in insurance. Participants also engaged in a hands‑on case study, during which they calculated the actuarial climate index for Poland.
Prof. Piotr Wójcik (Department of Data Science) led a 12‑hour introductory course in Python for data analysts. Participants learned the fundamentals of working with data in Python, including data visualization, time‑series handling, and automation of analytical tasks.
The final day of the programme was devoted to the workshop “Accounting for changes in the fair value of insurance contracts in profit or loss and equity under MSSF 17 for profit‑sharing insurance policies in the context of interest‑rate changes and their impact on the stability of financial results,” conducted by Anna Gwiazda and Igor Stoliński. The workshop covered, among other topics, the structure of the MSSF 17 balance sheet and profit‑and‑loss account for life insurance, the role of the time value of money, the effects of interest‑rate fluctuations, and the mechanics of valuing profit‑sharing insurance contracts under MSSF 17.
We are pleased that initiatives supporting the development of actuarial and risk‑analysis competencies are undertaken at our Faculty. The Actuary – Data Scientist – Risk Manager educational track at WNE UW is designed for individuals interested in actuarial science, financial mathematics, and probability theory, enabling students to acquire practical skills in risk assessment, forecasting, and risk management.
