Inauguration of the 2026/2027 Academic Year at the Faculty of Economic Sciences UW
On 28 September, the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw officially inaugurated the 2026/2027 academic year. The audience gathered in the Adam Mickiewicz Hall at the University’s Auditorium Maximum - students, academic and administrative staff, and friends of the Faculty were welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences UW, Dr hab. Gabriela Grotkowska, Prof. UW. We were honoured by the presence of the UW Vice-Rectors: Prof. Ewa Krogulec, Prof. Sambor Grucza, Prof. Zygmunt Lalak, Dr hab. Adam Niewiadomski, Prof. UW, and Dr hab. Maciej Raś, Prof. UW.
Prof. Sambor Grucza, Vice‑Rector for Cooperation and Human Resources, encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the University, such as the choir, theatre, and international exchange programmes. He also referred to the oath and mutual commitment it represents: students pledge to study diligently and uphold the good name of the University, while the University is responsible for providing conditions that enable learning.
Dean of the Faculty f Economic Sciences UW, Dr hab. Gabriela Grotkowska, Prof. UW, emphasised the community‑building role of the University. She also raised questions about the essence of economics - making difficult decisions in the face of diverse challenges. The Dean highlighted the importance of continuity within the University and the value of time, the most precious resource in today’s world.
Dr Dominika Gadowska‑dos Santos, Vice‑Dean for Student Affairs, reminded attendees what the Faculty of Economic Sciences stands for. She also encouraged students not to shy away from saying “I don’t know” in the context of studying economics.
Students admitted with the highest recruitment results received commemorative student record books. We hope they will serve as a pleasant symbol of the beginning of their studies at the University of Warsaw.
The inaugural lecture, titled “The Economy in the Age of Algorithms: How Artificial Intelligence Changes the Rules of the Game”, was delivered by Dr Dariusz Standerski - Secretary of State at the Ministry of Digital Affairs and affiliated with the Department of Economic History at WNE. He noted that the new cohort of students faces fascinating discoveries, problems, and challenges, and stressed the importance of asking questions, having doubts, and seeking answers.
Invitation to cooperate with the WNE Student Government was addressed to fellow students by Szymon Krzanowski.
The musical setting of the ceremony was traditionally provided by the University of Warsaw Academic Choir.
We sincerely thank everyone for their attendance - including representatives of several dozen units of the University of Warsaw. We share photographs by Krystian Szczęsny and invite you to view the short photo report.
