University of Sussex International Junior Research Associate Scheme

The IJRA is a pioneering programme that aims to develop future research leaders by supporting talented and
ambitious undergraduates to undertake supervised research at Sussex during the summer. IJRA participants
work on a project for eight weeks, providing them with the opportunity to engage with distinguished
researchers and develop invaluable academic skills and networks. They also present their research to
supervisors and other senior academics at a University showcase reception.
We would like to offer one student from your university a place on the scheme for the coming summer.
Programme Dates: till 9.04.2026r. to
Sussex will support the selected student by:
• waiving fees for the programme
• waiving fees for University accommodation
• providing a programme of free campus social events and activities
• providing free training workshops
Application process:
Sussex Global Engagement will work to finalise specific projects that will be available for your students to
apply to as part of the formal application process. Students will be required to submit the following
documents as part of their application. (The project is open to second and third year students only).
1. CV
2. One page covering letter addressing a particular project, why they are interested in the programme,
relevant skills and experience, and future career interests
3. Academic transcript
A couple of other key points:
• Students (or their home university) will need to fund their travel to Sussex and other
subsistence/living costs for eight weeks additional to the waived costs for University

• Applicants would need a minimum GPA or equivalent of 3.0, and meet English language requirements
and any pre-requisites that may be listed with the attached research project;
• The scheme is not credit bearing

About the scheme
Sofia University, St. Kliment Ohridski- Summer course of Bulgarian language

Period of stay and length of stay: 12 July- 01 August 2026, approx. 3 weeks
Number of scholarships: 1 place for course of Bulgarian language
Who can apply: students of minimum 2nd year of first-cycle studies or long-cycle studies students of second- cycle studies
Eligible units/fields of study: all units of University of Warsaw
Financial conditions: free of charge participation in the language course, accommodation, meals ( but meals only on the days of classes), afternoon cultural programme after classes (theme walks around Sofia, visits to museums and galleries, film screenings, meetings with writers).
The following costs are not covered : journey to Bulgaria, insurance or visa ( if applicable), participation in 2 weekend trips out of Sofia ( 2 trips in total during whole course)

Programme:
- Morning:
3 academic hours of practical Bulgarian language for all levels - Afternoons:
2 academic hours of practical Bulgarian language with an interactive focus for primary levels
or
2 academic hours of specialized lectures in Bulgarian language and Bulgarian culture for advanced levels ( advanced participants can choose between specialized seminars in the following areas:- Bulgarian language and translation;
- Bulgarian literature and culture)
Required documents in Polish or English:
- Consent Form, signed by Head of the Educational Unit (EUH) or Mobility Coordinator;
- Certificate of grade average from the entire period of study, issued by the Student’s Office at the unit – at least 3,49
- Motivation letter justifying the participation in the course
- Curriculum Vitae including information on academic achievements, distinctions, awards etc.
- Certificate/ proof of the English language skills at minimum B2 level; a language certificate or a confirmation from the lecturer conducting English language classes at the University of Warsaw
Evaluation criteria:
- Justification for participation/motivation (0-5 points)
- Average grade from the entire study period – at least 3,49 (0-3 points)
- Achievements, distinctions, awards (0-3 points)
- Year of studies- priority given to senior students ( 0-1 point)
Each member of the evaluation committee can award a maximum of 12 points.
Remarks:
- The receiving institution shall reserve the right to review the exchange enrolment request and make the final decision according to the receiving institution’s internal regulations and the legal regulations imposed by the national and/or local authorities.
- Candidates may, at any time, be asked to show original documents providing achievements and received awards.
- Candidates take care of the visa ( if applicable) on their own in accordance with the procedures of the host country
- The language course is open to students – UW student status is required for the entire duration of the course. It also applies to final year students.
Application deadline: Wednesday 25 March 2026, until 08:00 am Warsaw time zone. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
Application (one e-mail containing all required documents with subject of email “ 2026 Sofia summer course of Bulgarian language”) shall be sent to the email address from the candidate’s university email address (§3 Order of the Rector of UW no. 279 from 10th December 2020). Applications sent from other email addresses will not be considered.
