Grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for Prof. Jacek Lewkowicz
We are pleased to announce that the project “New Horizons in Climate Policy: Regulation, Judicial Interpretation, and Public Discourse on Social Media” by Dr hab. Jacek Lewkowicz, Prof. ucz., has received funding from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education under the programme “Science for the Development of Society”.
Professor Lewkowicz’s project addresses climate change - one of the most significant contemporary challenges with broad and long-term implications. It focuses on the role of political and economic systems, analysing public policies across three key dimensions: legislation, judicial rulings, and social perception.
The project will include a quantitative analysis of climate policy content, identifying major focal points in policy design, evolution, and patterns of implementation across countries. Using text mining, econometrics, and machine learning, and incorporating economic, social, and political indicators, the study will examine a global sample of countries over recent decades.
Climate-related judicial rulings will also be analysed, with particular attention to interpretative approaches and the influence of institutional, economic, and environmental factors on court decisions. Based on cases of selected country, the project will seek to identify landmark trials that shape subsequent jurisprudence.
In addition, the project will examine social discourse on climate policies across selected social media platforms. Using text mining, machine learning, and econometric tools applied to textual, visual, and video data, it will analyse reactions to weather-related disasters and the dynamics of public debates on climate policy.
The project contributes to the development of economic research on climate change and studies on the effectiveness and perception of formal institutions. Its aim is to measure public acceptance of governmental climate policy actions and to understand how public debates around these actions are formed.
Funding of 1 147 247,20 PLN has been awarded for a period of 36 months.
