Lecture by Monika Kot – a doctoral student at the Faculty of Economic Sciences during the Spatial Warsaw Seminar
The first Spatial Warsaw Seminar of the current academic year will focus on the topic: „Spatial diversity in innovation: mapping technological firm dynamics”. (A full description of the presentation is available below).
The study will be presented by Monika Kot, a doctoral student affiliated with the Faculty of Economic Sciences, as well as the research centres Spatial Warsaw and DELab UW.
The seminar will take place on October 27 at 17:00 in Room B111. Those interested in attending online are kindly asked to contact Dr Kateryna Zabarina at: @5LHre&w=IvXyB`~zZQ$Pg_]#['0*%TXmfv`nG_KVv&@2vYXL.

Technology-based firms (TBFs) drive innovation and economic growth but face high failure risks influenced by their local environments. This study examines how micro-geographic neighbourhood structures shape the survival of over 40,000 TBFs in Poland’s Masovian Voivodeship (2012-2021). Using full-population firm-level data, 500-meter neighbourhoods were constructed and survival was analysed through econometric and machine learning models supported by explainable AI. Results show that inflows of same-specialisation and other technology firms hinder survival, while inflows of non-technology firms and stronger local specialization enhance it. The study underscores the importance of micro-geographic contexts, highlighting the resilience of firms in mid-density urban and peri-urban areas. Possible directions to deepen and extend this research will also be discussed.
