Support for Students and Doctoral Candidates – A Comprehensive Guide
The University of Warsaw offers a comprehensive support system for its students and doctoral candidates. This system includes accommodation, financial assistance, scholarship programmes, and psychological support.
The University of Warsaw provides a range of benefits for individuals facing challenging financial circumstances. One of these forms of support is student accommodation. The University currently offers a total of 2 722 places in its student residences. Although the two main rounds of room allocations have already been completed, individuals who have not yet been granted accommodation are still encouraged to join the waiting list. Both students and doctoral candidates of the University of Warsaw may apply for a place in a student residence. It is also possible to obtain accommodation for a spouse or partner as well as children. Detailed information is available on the website of the UW Student Welfare and Support Office.
The social scholarship is intended for students whose family’s monthly income per person does not exceed PLN 2,099.70. The scholarship is paid monthly in a fixed amount. Applications must be submitted twice during the academic year, separately for each semester. To apply for the winter semester scholarship, students must submit a declaration of income for the year 2025 along with an application via the USOSweb system. Students who, through circumstances beyond their control, find themselves temporarily in a difficult life situation may apply for a one-time financial allowance. This benefit is intended for individuals facing sudden and costly difficulties that hinder the continuation of their studies. In the 2026/2027 academic year, the maximum amount of the allowance is 5 500 PLN. It may be granted up to two times during the academic year, provided that each application concerns a different unforeseen event. Applications should be submitted through the USOSweb system.
Students who hold a disability certificate may apply for a scholarship for persons with disabilities. Applications are currently being accepted, and support is available from the staff of the Office for Persons with Disabilities.
Doctoral candidates under the age of 35 may also apply for additional forms of social support. These include, among others, emergency grants, loans for residents of the Research Staff Residence Hall, and subsidies for personal and children’s holidays.
The University of Warsaw also supports individuals who achieve outstanding academic, artistic, or athletic success. One of the available forms of support is the Rector’s Scholarship. Applications for the 2026/2027 academic year may be submitted until 15 October. The scholarship amounts to 1 200 PLN per month and is awarded for a period of nine months. Further details can be found on the website of the UW Student Welfare and Support Office.
Newly admitted students and doctoral candidates may also apply for participation in the “Start Scholarship” programme. Under this programme, students receive a one-time grant of 12 000 PLN, while doctoral candidates receive 18 000 PLN.
The “Quality Enhancement Scholarship: Finish in Five” programme was created for doctoral candidates who have had to extend the deadline for submitting their doctoral dissertation due to objective circumstances. Information about this programme is available from UW doctoral schools.
Psychological Counselling Centre of UW remains available to students, doctoral candidates, and employees at all times. Its staff provide short-term psychological support, consultations with psychologists and psychiatrists, and opportunities to participate in therapeutic groups. Members of the academic community can also access the UW Helpline and the UW Trust Chat.
