General information

The Warsaw Actuarial Summer School was established in 1990. Subsequently it became a joint venture of the University of Western Ontario, Canada, the Faculty of Economic Sciences at University of Warsaw, Poland, and later on the Polish Society of Actuaries. There were also other co-operators such as the Ministry of Finance, Poland, the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, France and the City University, Great Britain. The full list of sponsors is very long, but the most generous grants have been received from the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, TEMPUS, and also the British Know-How Fund.

The aim of the School is to prepare students to make use of contemporary methods of actuarial sciences in life and in the non-life insurance industry, according to the western professional standards in this field, and according to the non-stable environment of the economy in transition, which still prevails in Central and Eastern Europe. Since its beginnings, the School has developed into a major international project in actuarial education.

From its beginnings, the School has been co-ordinated by Dr. Krzysztof Stroiński of the City University (formerly of The University of Western Ontario). The Faculty of Economic Sciences at Warsaw University, being since 1991 the host and co-organiser of the School, has taken over the full organisation effort since 1996. The School has been administered since 1995 by Dr. Wojciech Otto, with substantial help of Prof. Marian Wi¶niewski. Designing the programme we permanently co-operate with Dr. Krzysztof Stroiński and Michał Górski, the President of the Polish Society of Actuaries.

Starting entirely with lecturers coming from western countries, the School has already established a faculty of Polish lecturers in a number of actuarial subjects. Most of them are former graduates from the School. They are also engaged in Post-Diploma courses in actuarial sciences, which are offered at the University since 1996, with Polish as the working language. Nevertheless, we hope to preserve the international nature of the Summer School both as regards lecturers and students. Therefore the programme still contains a variety of courses lectured by invited lecturers from Western Europe.

Education at the School is organised on three levels, assuming each student participates in three subsequent editions of the School. Basically the programme for the first level is the same in each edition, whereas there are small differences between courses offered each year for the levels II and III. It happens that some courses are offered for joint levels II and III, being not offered at all next year. Therefore continuons of participation (in subsequent years) is recommended.

There is a possibility to be admitted at once to the level II. It happens most often in the case of non-Polish participants, who have already gained some professional experience and/or some level of actuarial training. Candidates for the first level are supposed to have basic background in probability and statistics and to be able to communicate in English.

Classes take place at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, University of Warsaw, Długa Street No 44/50. The library with a rich collection of actuarial books and teaching materials is located also in the Department building. There are 5-6 hours of lectures per day, from Monday to Friday, five weeks every summer, starting in the last week of June. Sometimes (usually once a week) there are also evening seminars, devoted to selected topics, which are addressed to all students and former graduates of the School.

Information about the 11th edition

The 11th edition of the School started on 26 June, and lasted until 28 July 2000. The programme has been generally similar to that of previous editions. Main differences have been - on the one hand - the lack of lectures on Non-life Reinsurance (this subject has been lectured in 1999 and is intended to be lectured in 2001, in both cases for joint levels II and III). On the other hand, special emphasis has been laid on longevity risk (which seems important for all countries switching to market solutions in the area of pensions). Also more emphasis has been laid on practice of investment. Bonus-Malus systems has been treated in more details, than it is usual in the framework of general course on ratemaking. Also (after a few years brake) there has been offered a special lecture on monetary policy and its impact on financial markets.

Foreign participants have come from Bulgaria, Croatia, Latvia, Romania and Ukraine. The International Actuarial Assotiation has granted scholarships to two of them. Foreign lecturers have come from Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, USA and UK.

The success of the Actuarial Summer School is due to its students, lecturers and - last but not least - to the friendly support of insurers and other firms and institutions:

Information about the 12th edition

12th edition took place in the period 2 July - 3 August 2001. New subjects in the programme were: Multivariate Statistical Analysis with Applications in Insurance, and Dependent Risks in Insurance and Finance.

As every year, seven Evening Seminars were given by the lecturers.

Some candidates were admitted straight to the second level (each year it happens so that few persons with a certain level of actuarial education and/or experience are accepted for the second level). Candidates for the first level were expected to be familiar with probability calculus and statistics. Graduates in mathematics, physics, technical sciences or econometrics were those who could take real advantage of participation. They had to speak English, too.

In the 12th edition of the School, the total number of participants was 50, including 13 persons from abroad.
